The Alex Krebs Tango Orchestra plays traditional and contemporary tango music for dancing. Growing out of a collaboration between internationally renowned Portland tango dancer, teacher, and musician Alex Krebs and jazz pianist and composer Andrew Oliver, the orchestra was first formed in 2011 to compose original tangos for dancing in the style of the best Argentine orchestras of the Golden Age of tango, which can be found on their album “Looking Ahead on the Shoulders of the Past”
The band performs their own tangos, waltzes, and milongas as well as new arrangements and transcriptions of classic repertoire from the Golden Age with a distinctive relaxed rhythmic style designed for maximum danceability.
In addition to Alex on bandoneon and Andrew on piano, the orchestra features Oregon Symphony members Erin Furbee (violin), Lisbeth Dreier (violin), and Jeff Johnson (bass), Seattle bandoneonist Ben Thomas, vocalist Megan Yvonne, who has also composed lyrics for many of Alex and Andrew’s original tangos, and occasional special guest singers Vicente Griego (world renowned flamenco vocalist) and Julian Ingram.
